SF
searing flames?
sorrows furnace?
S*** F***?

there are too many skills and places for these "initials" to not become confusing in short order.

I'm with Scrinner...

Never the less it's true that the amount of skills are a bit confusing.

First there was an SV necro as addition for solo farming UW (Sympathetic Visage)
Now with the buff there's an SV necro that use Spoil Victor

Anyone fancy farming some Greens in SF?

Like anyone is going to mix this up with Searing Flames, or something similar.

I would agree that when you see new acronyms, it may be annoying to not know what it means.

Ask a guildmate or brave local chat if there is an acronym that you do not know yet. One thread will not stop people from using them.

You realize that some people post here without the desire to appeal to Anet directly, right? I think it's quite clear that he's appealing to the playerbase that reads these forums.

That said, I strongly agree with the OP. I was trying to figure out what b/p meant in terms of ToPK farming. It couldn't have been Boon Prot, because that didn't make much sense in the context that it was a superior farming build. After much digging around and searching I found the original post: Barrage/pet.

The internet is full of bad spelling and grammar. Let's not further complicate things with degenerate acronyms.

If someone in the Gates of Madness starts calling you a noob, for asking for a sympathetic visage for Shiro, at least you know you don't want them in your group. (Happened to me once, by a "pro exped dervish w/ wild blow, who finished the mission with henchies and was looking for masters".).

And if someone asks for a SS/SV necro, it should also be pretty obvious that it's not a Spiteful Spirit/Spoil Victor.

Most of these acronyms are very domain specific. SV for simpathetic visage is used almost exclusively for UW, SF for sorrow's furnace is rarely used, since anyone in Sorrow's Furnace already knows they are there, and Spoil Victor, obviously, is specifically requrested for Gates of Madness anyway.

I can't think of any other cases where it would be applicable.

I try to think of it as a game. Whenever someone types gibberish and abbreviations, I try to figure out what they really mean. It's either that or bang my head on a wall. My head already hurts...

What about the whole UW abbreviation?

Person 1: "Im going to the UW, anyone want to come?"
Person 2: "Sure, ill meet you in ToA D1"
Person 1: "I mean the new UW"

UW for the Underworld, and UW for the other Underworld within tombs (which should really be referred to as tombs. Its stupid to call it the UW when its clearly not the UW.)

Acronyms do get annoying sometimes. Especially when an acronym could mean 2 things within the context it is used.

lol irl

on a more serious note, clarity is needed for CERTAIN abbreviations, I.E. when asking someone to take SS (spiteful spirit, spinal shivers?) it would be helpful to tell them exactly what you want

So err... you want people to not use acronyms anymore because you're too lazy to ask what they meant? o.o Yeah, it might be temporarily confusing, but you can either use context clues ("let's go farm SF" obviously means Sorrow's and not Searing) or just ask. Problem solved. o.o

Erm since I saw a guy with a guild tag refering to WW2 (for the OP - argh sorry: for the original poster: World War Two) looking for a SS, I'm even more confused with this abbreviation.

Its all in the context. If you see someone spamming: Looking For tank to farm SF" they obviously arent gonna farm for searing flames, but Sorrows furnace.

Many of these pickles get solved by just reading the entire sentence and clever thinking

I find it kind of neat that people have manipulated language and learnt to understand it. Albeit, it's basically slaughtering normal words, and maybe I'm a geek, but I really think it's so cool how people adapt and just pick up on modifications for language.

WTS req8 IDS +5e(always) 3/1V +29hp, S/B50k, B/O100k OBO
(I don't even know if such an item exists, but whatever). Many people here will know what that means, and they jsut don't realize that they've learnt to adapt to that.

I think it's cool
